Dementia awarenes week is all about opening up!

What is Dementia?

Dementia is a common condition that affects about 800,000 people in the uk. your risk of developing dementia increases as you get older, and the condition usually occurs in people over the age of 65.

Dementia is a syndrome(a group of related symptoms) associated with an ongoing decline of the brain and its abilities. This includes problems with:

  • memory loss
  • thinking speed
  • mental speed
  • mental agility
  • language
  • understanding
  • judgement
People with dementia can become apathetic or uninterested in their usual activities, and have problems controlling their emotions. They may find social situations challenging, lose interest in socialising ,and aspects of their personality may change.

A person with dementia may lose empathy(understanding and compassion),they may see or hear things that other people do not(hallucinations),or may make false claims or statements.

As dementia affects a persons mental abilities, they may find planning and organising difficult.Maintaining their independance may also become a problem.Aperson with dementia will therefore usually need help from friends or ralatives, including help with decision making.

Your GP will discuss the possible causes of memory loss with you, including dementia.other symptoms can include:

  • increasing difficulties with tasks and activities that require concentration and planning
  • depression
  • changes in personality and mood
  • periods of mental confusion
  • difficulty finding the right words
Most types of dementia can't be cured, but if it is detected early there are wys you can slow it down and maintain mental function.

Today we took full advantage of the glorious weather and hit the beach follwed by the sealife tower tickets we got when we took Aaron to the sealife center on saturday. fantastic family fun!!

things we have done in weymouth so far

a few pictures of some great things we have done:

The kite festival

The largest UK beach kite festival,a 3 day event bringing in 1000's of locals and visitors alike. lots of stalls, events, and food plus in the pavilion the kids could create and design their own kites.

I won us a massive tiger too!!

We followed the kite festival up in the afternoon with a lovely boat trip to sightsea portland £10 adults £5 children. this is another thing i highly recommend great value for an hours trip and stunning views!!

Aaron's birthday. part two.

Well as you all know from my last post our ickle boy was 3 friday 16th may we had cake, pressies n fun in the sun, then on saturday 17th we took him and two of his siblings to weymouth sealife center,if you plan on going i highly recommend you get a resort guide(you can get from many shops, chippy's and hotels/b&b's ect as in it you will find a voucher for 50% off upto 6 people. included in the ticket price you also get a free ticket per person to the sealife tower(drive or take the land train directly there for £1.50 one way-may be a little pricey but its cheaper than a bus and the kids love it!)
